  1. This Map loads with the average American Indian and Alaskan Native (AIAN) drug-related death rate in each state accross all years. Darker colors correspond to higher death-rates. The grey states have no federally recognized Native American reservations.
  2. Hover over a state to view that state's AIAN drug-related death rate.
  3. Select a specific year to view the death rates in that year.
  4. In green states Tribes have criminal jurisdiction. In orange states Tribes don't have criminal jurisdiction. Purple states are mixed.
  5. Click a specific state to see the breakdown at the county level. Note that color scale is much higher at the state level than at the national level.
  6. The data for this map came from the National Center for Health Statistics Multiple Cause of Death. The county-level and state-level files were used.
